Modeling optical pulses under novel dispersion and diffraction schemes

Classical diffraction of light propagating in dielectric media including air is described by the Laplacian operator. This is also for true temporal dispersion of optical pulses, typically modeled by a second time derivative. Novel photonic systems present an opportunity to engineer dispersion and diffraction which together with nonlinear effects provides new spatio-temporal effects. We will present two cases of current interest: fractional diffraction and quartic dispersion both in a nonlinear regime (fractional NLSE and 4th order NSLE).
